He is an Australian citizen and turns 98 in September. These days, he has one goal in life. "I want to be here in my own home, until such a time as I die," Mr Smit said. "A number of countries, Canada included, have temporary carer visas," he said
"Just like a visitor visa, someone would come here and they'd need to be self-funded. "They wouldn't get access to Medicare, they wouldn't get access to government payments. "They would be entirely self-sufficient and based on that I can't see any downside." Mr Glazbrook says the visa would be subject to periodic review and once the care situation ended, the carer would return to their home country.
